This may appear to be a very naive question, but perhaps someone could steer me in the right direction. I see from time to time, a release of a new train. But, not being a native of the UK, I cannot find which route(s) to download to run that train. I realise I can use BRR to run the trains on any route. But in the interest of authenticity, where do I look to find, perhaps an index of trains with the actual routes on which they run/ran?

You can run and train on any route. All you need to do is open up the route file and see what is listed next to 'train.folder'. For example if it says 'train1' and you want to run 'train 2' on that route, browse to your BVE train folder and rename the 'train 2' folder 'train 1.' Then simply reopen BVE and open the route you wish to drive and the train you wish to drive will ready and waiting!

I hesitate to say this, but the wikipedia pages for the various locos and multiple units are probably not a bad place to start. For instance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_87.
It also helps to browse various BVE forums when the trains are released - not to mention the traction and rolling stock forum right here. If need be, just ask in one of those forums where a specific train was or is being used; somebody will probably tell you.
