Which IPod / mp3?

Ok, the situation is that my Creative Muvo 1GB mp3 player has, after 3 years of sterling service and appalling treatment decided to go belly-up.
Thus with no budget (well you know what I mean) I need something new.

Never really looked at iPod's before, but they seem to be fairly reliable. I already have Itunes on my PC. But the Nano looks more affordable than the classic, but its only £60 for 5x the capacity.....(4GB Nano vs 40GB Classic).I mainly use it for when traveling around, and am not bothered about getting all my music onto it. Video doesn;t really matter either.


Can anyone recommend any of the above, or any other mp3-esque player for under £60..... I'm willing to spend more for quality and reliability,but ideally would like something over 1GB which is cheap, reliable and has a nice user interface and nice copying from PC.

Unless you are going to use iTunes to purchase music, or want to spend ages converting your music into the correct format, stay away from an iPod!

My recommendation would be one of the Creative Zen range. I've found them to be extremely reliable, excellent quality, easy to use and fairly priced.

And before our resident Apple spokesman Tom says anything, iPod's really aren't as great as people make out. They're more of an image thing. I spent 8 months in a job having to use them day in day out, and they are annoying and unreliable! ;) :)

I would never purchase any MP3 player that wasnt a Creative. They are simply fantastic.

Being a Singaporean myself, I hate Creative! The education dictionary that they give to schools are crap and they were Made In China. Their MP3 Player for Asia was Made in Singapore but if you open up you will be seeing that some parts are Made In China, only Asia Countries get these but do not know about other country. I might soon send a letter to our ministry of education to approved more digital dictionary, I simply hate the crap stuff that I got. The digital dictionary I got from Creative was indeed a crap, the internal glass broke a day before my big exam. What a "good" product!

iPods can be very tempremental. They're great, but they can be quite frustrating sometimes.

I have a Creative Zen Vision M 30 gb and it is excellent.
It has not failed once in the 4 months I have had it so far.
Battery lifr is excellent, as is the software that comes with it, especially the video converter!
If your budget will stretch to it, then get one if you can!

I used to have a Creative Zen thingymajig 80Gb but it doesn't work with Mac (well it does, but I'm a tight sod and I refuse to pay £50 for some software).

I've got an iPod Touch 8gb on order though - though if thats a little too expensive for little space the iPod Classics are still hard drive based.

What's wrong with 'em? It's not Apple's fault that the Windows DRM system that everyone else uses is incompatible with Windows and that they refuse to make it compatible with Windows... hence Apple having the proprietary iTunes and iPods.

to be honest, aslong as it plays music, sounds good, looks ok, i am not bothered really.

and thats coming from the guy who's idea of a HiFi requires 5 men to carry it!

Apple stuff is great. It's about time I replaced my 20gb 4G iPod though, I think I'll wait and see if O2 will do me a decent deal on the iPhone.

That iPhone is WAY overpriced. I myself would get a XDA 2 which has a much higher resolution anyway.

No it isn't.

£199 for the iPod features (iPod Touch 8gb). £60 for the phone which is basically the cost of a very good phone on a contract.

I've already got an XDA Orbit which I'm not overly fussed about apart from the GPS. As I said, I'll see if O2 will do me a deal. I'm already a customer, so I'll see what happens when I threaten to cancel my contract ;)

Yes, and?

You're effectively paying £60 for the phone itself - the extra is for the iPod features.

Most contracts are normally around the £35 mark nowadays anyway.

yes pc world and their partner currys are rubbish, i went in there one day, every single computer was discontinued/out of stock, popped into comet down the road, came out with a awesome computer, loads of addons, and they chucked in a 20" screen!

Arghhh! Can we keep the Mac vs PC debate for elsewhere. they are each good in their own way, and I use each when it is the most appropriate tool for what i want to do.

Thanks for the advice on creative. I liked my little MuVo. To be fair small and not desirable is good as it means I worry less about it being nicked from my bag. Also Video isn't really a need I have ATM. The iPod menu system also confuses me, but I;d learn that if I owned one...

well regarding the menu systems on the samsungs, it just its arranged by artist, or album, or whatever, but simpler than the ipod as it has up/down/left/right/centre OK/play-pause/back/skip forward/skip back buttons on the front, and vol up and down on the side.

the Muvo has given me a very good service, untill the USB connector broke, and is now out in afghanistan serving with the Coldstream Guards for 8 months

Just brought one of the new SanDisk Sansa Express 2gb. Not bad actually, got it cheap on Amazon, also is first cable-less, flash-based mp3 player with MicroSD expansion slot.

When I bought an MP3, I chose to avoid iPods because they were, IMO, overpriced. My MP3 broke down twice just a few days after the warranty expired (oddly enough), so I bought an iPod.

The first was faulty, but Apple gave me a new one which I've had since January 2006. the sound qualiy is much better, it's easy to find the rfight songs to listen to and you can, if you want, put videos and stuff on.

Invest in an iPod!

I have had my Creative Zen MicroPhoto for nearly 2 years now, and I've loved it from the start! I had previously had a Creative Zen Micro, and the headphone socket broke after about 11 months (a known issue with this particular player). However, I got it exchanged for the more up to date MicroPhoto with no problem at all (as it was within the 12 month warranty period).

I've never had any real trouble with my MicroPhoto - it's been reliable, its easy to use, the computer-player transfer software is also dead easy. I'd highly recommend a Creative.
