I'm afraid that, contrary to your posting, I believe that ALL counties are merely administrative areas.

Absolutely right! To hear some people talk you would think that someone, back in Norman or Saxon times, suddenly decided that it would be nice to set up some counties, just for the fun of it. Counties were created as administrative areas and have been changed and modified over the years as administrative needs have changed, so one version of a county is no more valid or appropriate than any other. The idea of a "traditional" county is a load of hogwash. (The same is true of Borough, District, and Parish boundaries.)

Sometimes it simply takes a while for people to accept the change but eventually they do. Ask someone who lives in Bethnal Green where they live and they'll tell you the East End of London - not Middlesex, which is its historic county. Similarly, Southwark (Surrey), West Ham (Essex) and Lewisham (Kent).

If you told someone in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk's best-known seaside resort, that they were in Suffolk, they'd think you were barking. You'd get a similar response if you insisted that the Isle of Wight was still Hampshire.

But OTOH, some people (including myself) say that Derby isn't in Derbyshire and Nottingham isn't in Nottinghamshire because they are Unitary Authorities.

An area doesn't *have* to be in a county!
