The winners will already have been, unofficially, selected.

Just as PFI wheezes were handed out to Labour's cronies, HS2 will be a boondoggle for Tory Party donors and old Etonian chums

Contracts will not go to tender for at least 5 years! Expect the same consortiums that are bidding for Crossrail contracts to figure highly at the London end - experience of London tunnelling will be very useful.

If companies from abroad can offer a better service/product than one based in the UK, then that would probably be chosen - hopefully it isnt done on the cheap though.

There are only so many companies capable of this type of construction. I would expect the following to be interested:
  • Bam
  • Carillion
  • Costain
  • Balfour Beatty
  • Vinci
  • Skanska
  • Laing O'Rourke

There may be others but I would be surprised if it goes beyond the usual suspects.

Ridiculous - it's highly likely that there'll have been a change of government before the spades go in the ground.

It will take around three years from Dec 2013 just for the Hybrid Bill to go through parliament - Crossrail took 32 months with nothing like the probable number of objections there'll be for HS2...

As of today they haven't mentioned a start date for physical construction, it's far too soon to wonder about who will build it, but if anything it will be ALL the usual big civils contractors, each doing particular sections - just like HS1 , Crossrail, Thaemslink etc etc...

CTRL was of course split into some 800 (ish) contracts with about 20 major packages so I'd be quite frankly amazed if HS2 is one large contract or even a series of mega contracts. As already said every major civils contractor will probably get a slice of the pie.

Most of the civils including the tunnelling and bridges on CTRL was done by specialist civils contractors that happened to have particular expertise in tunnelling, bridge construction or ground works not specialist rail construction teams. Recent highways experince seemed to be key repeating element in sucessful bidders / bidding JV's. Crossrail thus far appears to be follwing a similar path.

Permanent way, signalling and OHLE was let in separate system wide contracts to the usual major rail contractors.
