I'm travelling from Sheffield to Leuchars in a couple of weeks. ... can anyone tell me where the best place to split would be?
If you want to use a flexible ticket rather than an Advance ticket, for a cheap but slow journey split at Leeds and Glasgow.
Sheffield - Leeds route Not Doncaster - Single £8.70, Anytime return £11.20
Leeds - Glasgow route Appleby - Single £38.90, Anytime return £45.40
Glasgow - Leuchars Single £18.30, Off-Peak Return (M-F valid after 0915) £24.20
Total single £65.90, return £80.80
This compares with £91.10 single, £92.10 return for a through ticket.
If you want Advance tickets, I would be inclined to split at Doncaster. Booking 2 weeks in advance, you may find Doncaster - Leuchars Advance singles on the
East Coast site for £26.70. If you find a suitable Doncaster - Leuchars ticket, you can sometimes buy this from Sheffield for a few pence more on the
East Coast site. To do this, choose
Show slower routes then
Via East Coast & other TOC connecting services, and also choose

via Rotherham Central. This routes you by a Northern stopping service between Sheffield and Doncaster, and avoids difficulties with the reservation quota on TPE's faster direct trains.
