Where to have lunch at Euston

Dear all

I'm looking for somewhere to have lunch at Euston. Let me explain...

In mid-May I'm returning home to Liverpool after six years in France [and umpteen before that in London] with my wife and more than enough luggage. Overnight ferry to Portsmouth then train – probably to VIC [but I'm open to persuasion on this]. Arriving in London about 12h00, then grab a cab to Euston. [Would it be sensible to prebook - I'm not a fan of Uber, but...]

After the chaos of moving and a night on the ferry we will not want to rush, so hoping for a leisurely pub lunch at Euston – don't want to head out since I'm a slow walker [walking stick] and we will have wheelies / camera bag / medications / passports etc. Taking our time for the 14h43, which I think is the last offpeak departure of the afternoon. As a longtime fan of Fullers I'm thinking of the Doric Arch [not least for the historic connection] but not sure: is it on the station concourse level or down to the street level?

Any suggestions re lunch or travel will be more than welcome. And once I'm settled in Liverpool I hope to be here on the forums more often.

Concourse and street level is the same thing at Euston (the platforms are at a lower level, with ramps leading down from the concourse); the Doric Arch is located near the bus station.

It's not cheap but I do like the ambience; I've not had food there for quite some time though.

If it wasn't for having a lot of luggage I would also have recommended Somers Town Coffee House, but that's a 3 minute walk away so it's probably best left for another occasion!

I like The Signal Box (Fuller's) which is actually inside the station, up on the upper level (there are escalators and possibly a lift to get up there?) as it has a nice ambience and you can watch the world go by from the upper level A lot of railway-related decoration

On this point, I wouldn’t worry. London’s black hackney cabs will see you well for this bit of the journey.

Finding one of these is likely to be less stressful than trying to find one specific pre-booked vehicle. There’s also likely more room for luggage in a black cab than in a standard car used for private hire vehicles.

Follow signs and/or ask staff at Victoria to direct you to the taxi rank.

The Doric Arch is not suitable if you have a lot of luggage, because you need to go up some stairs to get to the bar, and down some stairs to get to the toilets, which are in the basement.

If you want a Fuller's Pub then use The Signal Box inside the station, which is accessible by lift and escalators.

I would take the train to Waterloo rather than Victoria, as the service is more frequent and quicker, and then just take a cab from the rank at Waterloo, which should cost around £20.

I would also suggest the Signal Box inside Euston Station, aside from the Doric Arch, the other possibility is the Royal George on Eversholt Street

Worth remembering that you can book free assistance at stations to get you and you luggage from train to cab to train. Bon voyage.

The Burger King is available if you want something cheap and cheerful quickly as it’s near platforms (I think 12 and 13) but I’d recommend the Doric arch as it does appear to be a good experience

When I said "street level" I was thinking of the steps to Eversholt street which I used to navigate regularly.

I'm already trying to decide between the fish & chips or the London Pride steak and ale pie!

But I won't be greedy and have a side order of pork pie with piccalilli, however tempting. That's what six years of French food does to the taste buds!

My only concern re taxi / private hire was avoiding a queue – but I take your point about finding the pre-booked. I don't think there will be too much of a wait at just after 12 noon.

Ah, I see; no you don't go that way, just out the front. However it's been pointed out that although there are no steps to get into the entrance, there are steps within the pub itself, so it's actually not quite so suitable as the one within the station. I had forgotten about those steps; the interior of the pub is actually on a higher level and you get a view of the activity at the bus stops below at some tables (which are even higher up, if I recall correctly).

I you don't mind a 3 minute walk, I'd be visiting the Somerstown coffee house; I eat there every so often and the food is always great there. But for ease of access, the pub within the station is your best bet, using the lift.
