Where to go... Summer 2017

First of all, I know next summer is a while off, hear me out...

As I'm in my final year of high school, I will have a rather large summer holiday in which a lot of it I will be at a loose end as my friends are still in school til July.

As I will be by myself for a fair section of the summer, I've been thinking about buying a rail rover and spending a few days exploring new areas of the country while I have the chance (before leisure rail travel becomes almost prohibitively expensive when I turn 16). I've had an idea of the 4 in 8 day North Country Rover, as it's local to me (Leyland isn't in the validity area, but might as well be ) and as I probably won't be staying overnight away from home it would make sense to do something up north. However I'm open to ideas of where to go, obviously a fair chunk of you have been to far larger areas of the country than me and know which lines and stations etc. are nice to visit. As I'd like to cover new lines while doing this I'll attach a map showing what lines I've covered and what lines I'll probably have covered by June next year anyway as soon as I have access to it.

Saltburn, Durham, Chester le Street, Ravenglass, Hexham, Alnmouth, Newcastle and the connected Metro stations, Darlington, Hartlepool all have something good in Summer.

Saltburn, Durham, Chester le Street, Ravenglass, Hexham, Alnmouth, Newcastle and the connected Metro stations, Darlington, Hartlepool all have something good in Summer.

Yep, it covers everything in England north of Preston/Leeds/Hull up to Carlisle/Newcastle.

Thanks, I've been on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway before when I was younger, and seeing as I want to go all the way up the Cumbrian Coast, a break in Ravenglass would be a good idea.

In my final summer holiday, in 2015, I did a round the country trip in first class. IIRC it went something like Capenhurst-Liverpool-Newcastle-Kings Cross-Stayed at a mates overnight-Euston-Glasgow-Wigan-Liverpool-Capenhurst. Some careful planning and a stack of RTV's helped with the trip, and it came to something like £88 in total.

The year before I did a 3 in 7 FOSW rover. One the best things I'd done. Use advances/splits to get you to Cheltenham Spa, where the FOSW kicks in and explore to your hearts content. I pretty much covered the whole area and worked my moves around as many loco hauled/HST's as possible.

On second thoughts, why go on a pacer in high summer?

Just try and find the deceased 142009 and dance the Whip-a-nae nae on it...

I did the 4 in 8 Freedon of Scotland the other summer and it was class. I'd recommend starting by getting the Highland sleeper from Preston up to Fort Bill - pure class

Why not see how many different stations you can visit? I've only just started doing that in the last few months (I still primarily focus on getting required units, less so on new track at the moment) and I'm really enjoying it.
