Where to go any ideas?

Not sure which thread to put this,

Anyway have a northern £10 day ranger to use tomorrow (last day) cant decide where to go? Want to see some HST passing through somewhere (Retford maybe?) not sure of anywhere else is Chesterfield any good? or was thinking going over towards Stockport/Manchester to see the WCML any other ideas, Also like a nice pint of ale if anyone has any reccomendations.

If the BBC are to be believed, most of the north is awash with snow and travel is ill-advised?

Maybe chuck your ticket in the bin and stay at home with a few beers in the warm

If you're after HST's York is the place, last Sunday morning whilst waiting for a train I saw an EC one (one with an EMT power car on one end), a Cross Country one and another East Coast one. You also get a few Grand Central ones each day.

The East Midlands Trains ones are nice, nice livery and they don't have the MTU engines so have a little more character when starting up.

A bit cold to be hanging round stations for too long at present. Assuming we are not all snowed in**, I suggest you spend most of the time riding on trains, maybe doing any lines you have not done before. For example, you could try something like Wakefield - Leeds - Harrogate - York (break for food, etc.) - Leeds - Hebden Bridge - Preston - Manchester Victoria - Halifax - Leeds - Wakefield, or walk from Man Vic. to Piccadilly, then to Sheffield - Barnsley - Wakefield. Plenty of other possible route combinations also available.

(** - Although no local snowdrifts here in St. Helens, I have written off my proposed trip to Severn Valley steam gala as local roads likely to be too icy for safe driving to Runcorn station.)

North East is clear of snow but it'll take some careful planning to get there and back via Northern. I managed it but I was staying in Leeds via the S and C.

York, Darlington, Durham vand Newcastle for HST. Though you'll struggle to get to Durham
