Where is the best station to change when going Gateshead - Whitby?

I'm moving to Gateshead in September to start at university. My auntie suggested that we go to Whitby soon after I moved, but where would be the best station to change from metro to train for the quickest and easiest journey? I can change at Central, Heworth or Sunderland, Central is closest but could have a Piccadilly P14-style trek if it involves platform 7, Heworth could be easier as it's a small station, Sunderland would probably be easiest as it's basically on the same platform but it's not on the core section meaning less frequent Metros and it's Sunderland. Where would you guys say is the best place to change trains?

If travelling, more-or-less, all the way to Whitby by train, and starting at Newcastle or maybe Heworth, then Middlesbrough would seem to be a logical place to interchange. Won't be quick!

I would suggest Newcastle as it's a far nicer station to wait for the train towards Middlesbrough/Whitby. Especially if the connection at Middlesbrough is between one of those semifast services which don't call at Heworth.

Besides the interchange from Metro to Northern at Heworth is also long and the platform is quite bleak. Not as bleak as Sunderland mind.

One suggestion is to go to Whitby by train but come back to Middlesbrough by bus (the Scarborough - Middlesbrough bus) as it gives a different view of the scenery.

The X10 also stops at Gateshead Interchange so it wouldn't be a terrible idea getting the bus all the way if the timings line up. Not terribly scenic but a fair bit of motorway running.

The X10 takes a good 1 hour 40 minutes Middlesbrough-Gateshead then the X93/X94 take another 70 minutes Middlesbrough-Whitby there is also an X4 but that takes 1 hour 50 minutes not sure the bus would be an alternative with those journey times.

Northern have re instated the Sunday only through train from Newcastle-Whitby, with 2 through trains back in the afternoon/evening.
