Where are we going?

I was just on a few nothern rail trains around the Manchester and Liverpool area a few weeks ago and thought it would have been very difficult to figure my way around had i not known where i was going.

Why?
Well there are hardly any annouments on the trains to say where they are going. The destinations signs are useally left blank. There are plenty of staff around but surely annoucments should be made on the train to say where its going and where the next stop is.

I also noticed this around a few other places aswell. Trains just seem to depart stations without any word from the guard as to where its going. I'm not sure if this applies to just local trains or just with certain company's.

Has anyone else noticed this lack of infomation on any other train?

Arriva at Shrewsbury are always telling everyone what train is going where, because no one listens. Theres a 3-train connection, the Birmingham, the Aber, and the Holyhead trains all in the station at once. You try telling everyone off the Aber and Brum trains that the train to Holyhead is about to depart, as soon as you shut those doors you know that everyone will be asking for the train you've just sent away!!

I have decided, after 4 years of observation, that most school children lack common sense. Get on the first bus they see, despite the fact that the one in 10 minutes will
a. offer then a seat, not crammed in like sardines
b. get them home 10mins quicker

I'm not affected My bus is after all that a 1620; it's unusual to see any other school kid on apart from me and one 6th former!

The 334's used have annoucement overload fever when first intoduced aswell.

Surely there is a happy medium between no annoucements and to many.

I think the 350s have less announcements actually than others. Same level as TPE, less than SWT desiros and less than Southern and southeasterns electrostars.

I am sure that the constant drone of automatic announcements, particularly on stations has lead to many people switching off when they hear an announcement, particularly ones with "may I have your attention please..." at the beginning. I know I do as they almost always contain some nonsense about not leaving piogens unattended or telling us not to feed our suitcases... or something like that anyway

NorthernRail trains either carry an FNW or a ATN destination blind, so if the unit ends up on the 'wrong' side of the Pennines you cant show the correct destination, unfortunately a hybrid blind hasnt been produced. As for the guards not making announcments, they usually do on the my trains but with the nature of Northerns services only having a few minutes between stops its not always possible for them to rattle off the stations - and if they did people would soon be asking the guard to shut up

Nobody ruddy well listens anyway. Why bother?

On Sundays we run the Hertfords down the Seven Sisters line where they are limited stops. This is a weekly occurrence and, even with the platform information screens and making lots of announcements, I still get aggro because I didn't stop at White Hart Lane or some other godforesaken place. It's the same when the Victoria Line is shut. They all still pile off after I've told them not to.

It can be annoying for us that do listen, though. At Glasgow Central, trains are frequently "piled on top of each other" in the platforms, and it's always good to know if you're in the right portion. Particularly for those morons who can't read where it says "front 2 carriages".

I've found that Northern have been quite good with announcements. I only tend to travel with Northern along the Buxton branch, but they always call out the stops and walk through the train for tickets and advice on routes and such. Very friendly conductors in my opinion too.
