Hi all.

I just dont understand why people on ebay are so determind to break the law be it civil law or railway bylaws.

I have just looked on ebay and come across a guy selling a full lookout kit includeing detornators, or what he likes to call them smoke signals.

He has also stated that (For an extra £20 you can get a set of keys and training books and safety manual in binder).

The items he is selling are :-
Lookout bag.
Red/blue and White/yellow flags.
1 metal 1 plastic coss badge.
1 material 1 plastic site warden badge.
2 metal lookout badges.
Short circuit clips.
1 horn 2 whistles.
10 smoke signals (year 08/07). (Detornators for rail staff)
Full first aid kit.

I dont know about the rest of you but i have reported him for selling saftey critical items and explosives, if any of you want to do the same here is a link to his item.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Network-Rail-...=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item3cb69201eb

Now i know that some people are going to have a go at me for reporting him and call me a jobsorth, and i say go right a head i dont care what you call me.

I am doing what i think is right and im not going to change that just because you think i should.

All the best.

Simon

it does say 'PTS holders only', if that helps

That's beside the point, if someone PTS qualified did need some or all the equipment on offer from Ebay then surely their own company would supply them with all their equipment needs.

Besides selling explosives is against Ebay rules!

I quite agree. How will the seller verify that he is selling to a PTS holder?! It wouldn't just be eBay I'd be reporting it to.

How would the seller even be able to verify that the PTS is genuine? I am safety critical and looking at my PTS card they don't exactly look the most difficult thing in the world to fake tbh.

Also if someone is PTS certified why would they be going on ebay for this stuff? Their employer would provide it to them.

And judging by the date stamped on those dets they would appear to still be in date and therefore useable. IIRC dets have a life expiry of 6 years from the date stamped on them. Therefore these would expire 2013/2014.

This could easily fall into the wrong hands. Fair play to OP. I don't normally advocate the reporting of staff but I think OP is certainly justified here. Seller is an idiot.

I'm not really sure about what this guy is selling, but a lot of the chaps I've ecountered on Ebay are just very, very bored and starved of attention!

Completely agree. A good deal of that equipment could be dangerous, or lead to dangerous situations in the wrong hands. You did the right thing Simon - I don't think anyone would disagree with that.

Do one better than reporting him to Ebay. They are useless in dealing with rogue ebayers! If someone who is clearly selling detornators then report them in confidence to the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321!!!

Hi all.

Thank you for all your responces I have just had a reply from the seller here it is:- LicensingBy Section 50 of the Explosives Act 1875 and by COER a licence for keeping railway fog signals is not required when they are kept by network rail or by a train operating company for use on the railway by network rail or by that train operating company. Any other organisation, such as railway maintenance companies and related contractors, may keep up to 5kg (net explosive quantity), approximately 600, of railway fog signals in unlicensed or unregistered premises.this is a quote for the Railway Group Guidance NoteGE/GN8532Issue OneDate April 2001As a COSS you SHOULD know this!!!As I am a registered contractor and all my safety critical equipment was brought by my self I reserve all right to the equipment! And the right to sell to any other PTS holder with the safety critical training required to operate this equipment.I understand you concerns about selling the dets in this way so I have removed this item but it will be going back on minis the dets.

It is better that he has removed the dets but he still is planning to sell the kit and keys which to me are still safety critical.

All the best.

Good to see that you did report him. I've seen them used on the SVR and wouldn't want them in the wrong hands.

If he does so, just report it again to ebay.

I suppose he can sell it on if he wants - he obviously knew that selling the dets was dodgy as otherwise he wouldn't have described them as smoke signals, for all the regs he is now quoting.

Great, selling 'some keys' - who knows what they could open? I hope if anyone is stupid/desperate enough to buy this they unlock something dangerous and perhaps Godwin's law should fall into place (...too harsh? Okay, I think they should only be mildly injured)

I think you mean Darwin's law, Godwin's law states that in a discussion the probability that someone refers to Hitler or the Nazis tends to one

I think Hitler would have sold keys if he'd had eBay back then. :D

I think you did the right thing.

Mainline staff will have their own stores for such things, so he evidently wasn't expecting to sell to them. Whilst it is harder for heritage staff to procure their equipment, there are legitimate sources, and one certainly shouldn't be turning to eBay for such items.

As for the detonators, there should never be sold anywhere other than railway suppliers, and it is worrying that they have been 'obtained' and then placed on eBay.

What an idiot indeed. As I recall saying on here somewhere before, unless and until the railways and their contractors get a better grip on who gets their hands on what keys and equipment, there will always be a high level of inherent risk when pratts like this are willing to put a few quid before any concern for the security of the industry they serve (or served) and their (former?) colleagues. I wonder if this bloke left of his own accord or was sacked?! Either way, his employer should have had his kit back in safe hands long before it had the chance to appear on ebay. A terrorist/nutter/cable thief's tool kit.

Again, what an idiot

This is certainly a verry worrying matter. It's open to anyone out on Ebay and could easily fall into the wrong hands. The consequences could be extremely severe if that were to happen.

The thing that makes me laugh is when someone posts a piece of railway equipment on eBay and clearly tries to hide it or duck under the rules.

An example is this item :- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Old-Obsolete-...ollectables_Railwayana_RL&hash=item53e6fa1ae0

The item description is an old obsolete railway T-bar, yet the picture shows that it is a brand new t-key that we use today, well at least that's the one Ive been given by our stores.

So unless the stores are giving me an obsolete t-key then i think this is a obvious lie.

All the best.
