A friend tried to buy a 3 monthly season ticket for London area at this years prices but starting next year. Was told they would have to pay the 2012 prices. I assume that is correct?
They travel form Tulse Hill [FCC] normally but may have asked at West Norwood [Southern].

Not if the ticket starts New Years Day. That's the only way now.
A season ticket is priced at the rate prevailing on the first day of validity. If it starts up to Jan 1st it will be priced at current levels, from Jan 2nd the new prices will apply. It doesn't matter when the ticket is bought.
What was the previous way and when did that end? I always thought every season ticket for next year that stated next year had the new prices. However I did read this morning that season tickets can be purchased online 14 days in advance so perhaps that was the loop hole which is now closed. If so, does this loop hole occur every year? If it does I'll make use of it next year.
Interestingly the prices raises mean that a monthly London all zones travel card is the same price from Shalford or Guildford, £366, where as previously it was £1 more expensive and as people told me on here previously, the Shalford route has far less restrictions on routes you can travel to London than Guildford.
