The import, sale or recycling of white asbestos is banned.

Where asbestos is in place in a building (and presumably a train), the owner is responsible for ensuring that the material does not deteroriate. If it is in place it can remain in place but should be removed where possible and certainly before the fibres pose a risk to human health.

Not quite. Normally it is safer to leave the asbestos in place unless it starts to deteriorate. It can be encapsulated to prevent that happening.

However if it is present, then there should be warning signs.

Its not questionable at all there has been significant research to confirm that it is less dangerous. However, that is not to say it is not dangerous - the fibres are still shaped like fish hooks so can't be breathed out.

Asbestos was very widely used for many years so assume any building over 30years old has asbestos unless proven otherwise.

That research was funded by the Chrysotile Institute (the asbestos industry) so should be taken with a huge pinch of salt.

And BTW I find your post about taking offence offensive. I've family in the building industry, and seeing personal friends die of mesothelioma from minimal exposure to chrysotile fibres is heartbreaking. All forms of Asbestos are extremely dangerous, and as stated there is no safe limit of exposure on any type of asbestos.

As others post, there are limited applications for redundant railway coaches.
If no longer fit for railway use, they not even be reliably weathertight.
Most stock now being withdrawn has power operated doors which adds appreicable cost and complexity to either retain in working order, or replace with alternatives.

Also purpose made portable, modular or prefabricated buildings are now cheaper and more readily available than in years gone by.
A secondhand Portakabin (trade name, other makes exist) is often a better choice for many industrial purposes than an old railway vehicle.

For basic living space a cheap secondhand mobile home may be more suitable and lower in price than an old railway vehicle, and is more or less ready to live in without modification.

This is the sort of product that has largely displaced old railway vehicles.

Available to hire or purchase, ready for use. I have no connection with the firm, but post the link to show why there is little demand/need for old railway coaches. Similar products are widely available.

Research has also been carried out by the BRE, TUV and independently in America and white is less dangerous.

I agree all forms are dangerous and have seen the affects they have.

One of the ex-South Eastern Cl 508 units is at the Fire Service College, Moreton in the Marsh. They may have some other stock there too. Merseyside FRS may also have a couple of Cl 508 vehicles IIRC.

There is (at least) a Mk3 DTV and two carriages from 390033 at the FSC too
