When is ticket acceptance not ticket acceptance?

Currently in the middle of an interesting situation travelling from Leeds to Liverpool.

The 1230 TPE Leeds-Liverpool was turned back at Leeds to provide an eastbound service due to trespassers at Brighouse, with passengers directed to either the 1312 Northern or 1315 TPE services. I’m currently on the 1312, which is a 3-car 195 and probably three times before departure from Leeds, the guard has advised that anybody with a TPE-only ticket would need to leave the train or pay for a new full fare ticket.

Now I was under the impression that Northern and TPE were accepting each other’s tickets during disruption. I accept that a single cancellation isn’t necessarily disruption, but we’re talking about a train being cancelled after 40 minutes in the platform at Leeds and a trespass incident and subsequent congestion leaving the Bradford route as the only Leeds/Manchester line available. The reason given, quoting broadly, was to allow passengers to board further down the line- as things stand, were about 75% loaded leaving Bradford with only Halifax, Mytholmroyd, Hebden Bridge, Todmorden and Rochdale left to call.

I just wonder whether this isn’t an unnecessarily confrontational attitude to take and whether the guard hasn’t made a rod for his own back.

The DfT was unequivocal about it. A Google search says any other service within "2 hours of the cancelled train". It also says your ticket has to say "TPE and Connections". I'm not sure how real those restrictions are.

It's not dependent on "disruption", the requirement is "cancellation" so this situation absolutely fits.

If your train is cancelled, and you still wish to travel to your planned destination, you don't have to buy a new ticket to travel that day. You can:

• Board any Northern, TransPennine Express, Southeastern or LNER train that's heading in the same direction (within 2 hours)

My question would be whether the Northern guard was aware of the 1230 cancellation when making those announcements and its not just a standard "I'm fed up of 1315 TPE passengers getting on the 1312 Northern" motivated announcement.

Sadly the Conductor is indeed 100% wrong. Fair enough they may have concerns with how full the train could potentially get later on in it's journey, but if that did happen it would be down to down to discuss their concerns with Northern Control and maybe potentially see if they would agree for the train to not call at some/remaining Stations before Manchester to prevent further overcrowding.

Definitely, because he made a reference to having three trains’ worth of people on board.

I suspect somebody may have had a word, because the full ticket check he promised on departure from Leeds never happened.

Ticket acceptance won't be applicable to everyone on the train, only those who have been impacted by an earlier cancellation.

The announcement should have been better worded, in my view.
