The current specification of HS2 rolling stock was published when Phase 2 have not yet been cancelled.
It is 8 coach long sets that can run as doubles, i.e. 200m + 200m = 400. New HS2 stations such as those in London, Birmingham and Manchester can accommodate the 400m long trains.
The order is fit for purpose if Phase 2 isn't cancelled.
However, Phase 2 is now cancelled and no hope reinstating, this spec is no longer appropriate. Stations beyond Birmingham are at most 250m long and can only accommodate single sets.
The existing trains, like 11 car Pendolino and 9 car class 800 / double class 805 are about 230-240 meter long.
Replacing WCML classic line services with the HS2 trains in current spec will mean capacity reduction, which people have rightly suggested one year ago.
Why is there still no change to the HS2 rolling stock order until now? If Hitachi has already started the development effort into HS2 trains, there will be money wasted. And the later the change is made, more costly will it cost.
Or maybe perhaps the order isn't be placed yet? If so, when?
