The barriers are pretty accurate, on weekdays we've been told that Freedom passes will open the barrier at exactly 9:28am and onwards, and when we tried that with a passenger it worked perfectly. It could be that there was a block set up on certain discounted tickets or ticket types or that it was demagnetised already
At Clapham Junction? What if the customer wants to use their pass on a service on which it's valid before then?

The Freedom Pass is valid at any time on London Overground from Clapham Junction. The Disabled pass is valid at any time on Southern West London line and the OAP pass valid after 09.00 on Southern West London line.

Apologies I should have mentioned that, yes we do know those restrictions and we let the passenger through the barriers, but they must come and ask us as their pass will not operate the gates before 09:28. (except on Weekends or BH's of course) :)

I believe trains are generally not timed to depart at 00:00 to avoid confusion as to which day the 00:00 belongs to.

Someone already made that point, although there shouldn't be any confusion if people use their common sense.
