When do you start getting ready to leave the train?

for Leighton northbound (if changing there) it's that row of fairly ugly very high houses, if you know what I mean.

The neutral section is the perfect landmark for me, I hear the air con go silent and my phone to stop charging (if it was plugged in) - and then as soon as the air con starts again I get up which is perfectly timed to be just before the announcement triggers so I beat the rush

Going south the announcement plays before the tunnel so is very early unfortunately so you can sometimes have to fight through the crowds of people that don't realise you have to push the door open button

Including York as I posted earlier, other landmarks include....

Alnmouth - Only ever approach here when alighting from the south so get stood up when I see the sight of the sea/fishing industry on the right. I remember once hearing that the royal train used to go slow through that section so passengers could admire the view, true I don't know.

Newcastle - Heaton Depot from the north and when passing the now partially demolished terraces of Saltwell from the South

Leeds - When passing Elland Road from London/South and having gone past Neville Hill from the North

My main form of transport is the Tube as of late and with that I only ever stand up one the "We are now approaching X" announcement is announced over the tannoy. The 2 stations I use most are Whitechapel and King's Cross which are unusual on the Hammersmith + C/District lines as doors open on the right hand side of the train so I make sure, especially in peak hours I am sat in seats near the doors on the right side for getting off, especially with suitcases

Travelling on the Hope Valley line recently, I was surprised to see a lot of people getting up for Sheffield not long out of Totley tunnel (presumably due to an announcement). Needless to say, they had a long wait standing in the aisle.

Normally if I know the route and we're terminating at the station, i'll get everything ready a minute or two before then most likely get up as we come to a stand. If the train is busier, i'll probably get up a minute or so before we're due to arrive.

If I don't know the route, i'll probably use RTT as a reference and listen to announcements. I rarely have a lot with me that'll prevent me from scooping everything into my bag and being up within about 20 seconds.

For London, normally into Waterloo I'm packing stuff up around Vauxhall, for Euston is is normally South Hampstead and Kings Cross is normally Finsbury Park (unless I've got a tight connection then it will normally be after the depot)

I normally get everything packed up and ready to go just after Willesden depot when on the way to Euston. Just after Wembley Stadium going into Marylebone, by Acton Yard going to Paddington and Finsbury Park for Kings Cross.

Naturally they thought it was the fault of the rail company for not giving them enough time to get off as despite being 4 minutes late CrossCountry should have waited longer.

What exactly is "naturally" about their apparent reaction?

I usually just have my bag, so wait for the brakes to kick in, unless there's a mass of people to get through, in which case if I don't know the station I'll get up a couple of minutes before it's due in.
I once saw a bloke who wanted to get off at Wakefield Westgate get up and stand by the door as the cross country service left Sheffield.
He didn't want to take any chances

I hope you're not one of those people who stands in the doorway and refuses to move down the train when they don't want the next station.

The is quite common, experience certainly counts for a lot in timing it. Going into Sheffield from Dore can take up to 10 mins, I don't normally move until we pass B&Q, Wolverhampton on Virgin from the north is the same, it announces early and then the train seems to more often than not get stuck at a signal just before the station.

I always find Manchester Piccadilly the best people start getting up before we have left Stockport.

Yes, on this occasion it got stuck outside the station as well. I don't tend to get up until I see the platform ramp.
