When do the Class 442's takeover the London-Brighton services?

Well from what i can recall the 442s will be taking over selected Off-Peak services, mainly at the weekends(?). And i'd hinder a guess that it would be from the may timetable change.

I read somewhere or other that the 377's were to be completely taken off the Brighton mainline services to be used elsewhere on Southern services. In their place would be the 442's. Maybe that's not correct then.

Yes details of what services will the 442's will work(particularly the weekends workings) would be great.

The 442 on Brighton Expresses all day isn't an early change, certainly not this May - it may not even be until May 2011 I think.
The majority of the changes that are happening this May are nearly all to do with the changes to allow the ELL to West Croydon and Crystal Palace...

There are some Brighton Express workings covered by 442's from this May these are in addition to the Gatwick Express Trains.

The additional workings include the following M-F:
1549 BTN to VIC
1819 BTN to VIC
1949 BTN to VIC
2219 BTN to VIC

1706 VIC to BTN
1936 VIC to BTN
2106 VIC to BTN
2206 VIC to BTN

Ah right - I'm getting confused between changing the stock on existing services, and extending additional Gatwick Expresses. All I could find about the latter was an additional 0813 from Brighton in Dec 2010.

Of course, SN wouldn't necessarily announce a simple change of rolling stock on a service that is already in the timetable...

Southern are rapidly introducing the 442s though. Surely with 377s replaced by 313s AND 442s that leaves a lot of 377s spare to increase capacity

Sure, but you are replying with the benefit of 6 months hindsight... I was commenting on the situation in April...

Not really, because the 460s were not used in the peaks. The original 17 x 442s effectively replaced the 8 x 460s from the moment they first arrived. The idea of having separate offpeak and peak stock appeared a bit stupid at the time...

(If all the 442s and all the 460s ran around at the same time your point would be valid, but it's effectively 'either 460 or 442'.)
