There used to be slightly more of them than there are now too, if I remember. There are currently some very long gaps. Didn't some services used to run through to Newcastle too?

There certainly used to be an 00.xx or 01.xx Trans Pennine service, which I think ran beyond the late 1990s.

Yes, (IIRC) a train would arrive into Newcastle shortly before 03:00, returning to Manchester Airport a few minutes later.
