When Cobbles Come Through Tarmac

Hi All,
I would imagine most car drivers hate it when this happens.
The Tarmac has worn down so much the cobbles have been revealed, well i love it when it happens.
Theres has also been news recently where tarmac has worn down to the point of some old tram rails.
Is there anyone else here that likes it?

I like streets with cobbles, it lends character to the street especially if it's a Lancashire location such as Accrington or even a fictional place such as Coronation Street.

Indeed watching the credits of Cornation Street brings back memories of my grandparents home in Accrington when I was a little boy especially with the shots of the back of the houses and the yards not forgetting that cold outdoor loo.

Probably all tarmac now but certain places should never get tarmac regardless of what drivers say and I am one before anyone bashes me for being bias against drivers.

We have some areas like that in lincoln, personally I hope the council doesnt do anything, so the cobbles come back (its a tiny side street that exits onto a one way road)

Speak for yourself: It's grim up north, but I love it!

It's interesting to see how little (and often how few layers!) lies between the modern tarmac and the old cobbles when the roads have been stripped for re-tarmacing. It wouldn't be practical to have the roads like that all the time though!

There's a B road out near my village that has been getting worse and worse since last winter. I'm half convinced that eventually it is just going to revert to being a muddy track if the council don't repair some of the pot-holes soon!

The Royal Mile in Edinburgh is ripped up every few years to be re-cobbled after punishment by traffic, bin lorries, buses and tourist coaches. As it is a national/world heritage site etc they wouldn't dream of tarmacking over them. I daresay there are less historically interesting cobbled streets in Edinburgh that have been sprinkled with asphalt.

Same can't be said for Henderson Street/the Shore down in Leith, seriously neglected damaging cobbles down there. Edinburgh Council are so stingy they won't even tarmac over the cobbled cracks.

There is also a very short stretch of old tram lines at the main junction on Waterloo place.

The lower section of The Royal Mile was done ages back.

There's a section beween Great Stuart Street and St Colme Street that was done a while back, but the tarmac laid over the cobbles and ramps made at the end. The ramps have now worn away quite badly, so it's like there's a kerb across the road.

Over here in the USA, in a city to remain nameless, it was decided to actually go back to cobbles on some downtown streets to give it that historic look.
The one thing I noticed was that the cobbles are way more slippery in the rain than asphalt (tarmac).
Especially if you are walking across the street.

That's certainly true, plus there is the most horrible noise whenever a car goes over it and nightmare vibrations on buses. Old Aberdeen has cobbles down the old high street, somewhere best avoided in rubber-tyred vehicles. Probably not so bad for horses and carts.

I think that you have no worries on that point....this forum is Trip Reports and NOSTALGIA and cobbles are definitely nostalgic However, the moderators may move it to the General Discussion forum,

I think the retention of cobbles is a good idea in terms of traffic calming. The best example of this probably being Dent in the Yorkshire Dales (in my opinion). If I recall correctly Hawes and Sedbergh also retain them too. I own a property in Belper (Derbyshire) which backs on to a street with cobbles but these are very poorly maintained.

Now then i've been a Londoner for many years and i love this city but there are plenty of tacky, boring, shabby, horrid and depressing places down here too! Fortunately Richmond is not one of them!

You, of course, are technically correct, BP, but I think, for some reason a lot of us say cobblestones even though setts is less of a mouthful!

I think we all mean the same thing.

I would think horses would consider these as "hobble-stones"!

That just looks like someone has nicked a stony beach and thrown them in concrete :P

That reminds me of the Brooklands Circuit in Surrey. After 70 years of being left derelict the surface has suffered quite badly. It's quite exhilarating, especially when I drove a Merc M-class down it at 40mph!

It's a real shame that there's buildings in the way that mean it's now impossible to restore the circuit back to it's original form.

It would have been brilliant during it's heyday. Well unless you want to build a permanent Scalextric circuit there... (hint)

Also, I just couldn't help myself having to keep watching the trains go by on the SWML adit runs behind the track. Don't worry I wasn't driving then!
