Wheel issues on a 1960s model

I recently received a Tri Ang Class 101 model, and ran a few test runs last night. It ran like a Pacer, and constantly sparked. After getting it checked out at my local models shop, the store owner told me the wheels were not suited for modern track, and said that I could try to lathe the wheels. Is this worth it, and if so do you recommend any places to do this?

As far as I am aware I think there are replacement wheels suited to modern track available for the triang class 101.

Also I recommend you checkout the youtube channel oobill. In 1 of his videos he replaces the old triang motor in a blue 2 coach class 101 with a ringfield motor from a lima class 117 motor coach and converts it to a cd motor before installing it into the triang class 101 motor coach.

Also if memory serves me well, he also replaces the wheels on the leading bogie and adds extra pickups to improve the overall performance of the unit.

Thanks for the info

The 101 has sorted itself out, the issue was the turn radius was too tight. It works well on 3rd Radius, just is very rough on 2nd.

I use code 100 Peco streamline, and generally speaking the old Tri-ang stuff runs fine, albeit with a bit of the third rail sparking effects. Be wary that some of the more complicated point work, such as single/double slips can throw a spanner in the works, as they are now made to finer tolerances which can cause the old Tri-ang flanges to hit or ride up over some rails.

I think I read that those Triang wheels are made of an unusually hard metal which needsd to be worked by a good lathe and heavy-duty cutting tools.
Is this information correct?

Either a lathe or a lot of bours with a good file. If it were me with 1 of those models I would certainly opt for a complete repowering of the unit whether it be with a lima or a hornby ringfield motor bogie.

My reasoning for this is that I have had more experience with ringfield motors and more recently converting those to be driven by cd motors for a much smoother and quieter running model.

Peco have been working through the range and the majority if not all their points now have finer tolerances.It scruppered my remotored Triang designed Rocket as a soon as it hit one it stuck fast.
