I occasionally walk the Derwent Valley Trail usually starting at Ambergate or Whatstandwell because car parking is easy at either station.

Last week I noticed work on the abandoned platform at Whatstandwell, fresh concrete and pile of steel beams. This week a staircase has made an appearance.

Is anyone aware of what maybe be happening or is it simply for engineering access?

I noticed that yesterday on my way to Matlock and wondered exactly the same thing.

It's a shame it's a rather hideous contrast with the rest of the original bridge.

Very curious. The end of the bridge leads to the canal towpath so it has to be retained despite the other platform being out of use, but I can't think of any reason anyone would need to go to that platform. It's stepped so it's not some kind of accessibility feature, but it appears to have tactile paving at its foot.

The steps have been installed by Network Rail to allow station adopters access to the disused platform to help with clearing and re-planting. I found this out from the meeting minutes of the Friends of the Derwent Valley Line.

I didn’t realise this weekend’s mindless vandalism had spread to Whatstandwell. :s

Let's hope their activities include a bit of painting too
