What's the story?

So you had/have/are planning a layout....

What was/is your inspiration behind it?

Why did you choose this layout? Was it the space you had, a certain period in railway history you wanted to replicate, a certain stretch of line, or just a thrown together idea?

I have one planned (which I'll share a bit later) and would love to hear some of your stories of how your layout came about....feel free to share some pics aswell!

At the moment i currently dont have a layout or an idea of the the course the lay out is going to take, but i am going to be having the era set in the early 90's/00's. My inspiration is that ive lived next to clapham junction since i was born ive seen trains come and go, notibly the slamdoors and want to re-creat scenes that are no longer here.

I have two layouts planned.
One is a 4mm 'OO' gauge light railway terminus, which has been planned on and off for *years*. For a long time, I lived in very small flats, and so only had space for a small layout, so I bought stock to suit. I don't want to sell it off so I'll still use the plan.
The other is an 'N' gauge urban layout, set in the South Eastern Division of the Southern Region, between 1985-2005. I now have a small spare room that I can use, so I have plenty of time for this one!
I haven't designed it yet, but you can see some of my reasoning as to why I've picked this as my prototype here:

I had to build mine to suit the space,

I've always wanted a larger layout, but I've never had the space. I tried to negotiate the shed to house a layout, but to no success. so I went with the next best thing and designed a portable layout in a small space.

I wanted to build modern image, all of my stock is modern and its the era I've always shown more of an interest in.

Thanks for the replies,

Mines been stuck in my head for a while but im now starting to act upon it. I'm going to purchase the rolling stock first, then the baseboards, track etc.

The Era will be early 90's - 2000's and be based on a mainline (four track) passing a marshalling yards...I live close to Tyne Yard where i spent a lot of time watching Trains when i was younger which is where the idea came from...but with a twist.

I'm gonna have the marshalling yards with a GNER depot based there (think Bounds Green/Craigentinny). I have quite a few Intercity liveried locos and coaches which I will station here and mix them with my GNER stock. I will create a Painting 'area' which is the twist as I have a few old HST's that i've got to different stages of re-spraying into the Blue GNER base colour and have a few coaches/loco's at different stages of being re-liveried.(Thinking some nearly finished with the GNER lettering almost complete and some at first stages)

I'll also have yard workings (Diesels/Shunters and trucks) and obviously express trains wizzing past every so often.

It'll be some undertaking as my old layout was very basic, and i've even spoke to my local model railway society to see if i am able to build this on a larger scale to maybe take along to shows etc (i'm thinking big here!).

Anyway let me know what you think of this and has anyone thought of doing anything similar?

The layout I am planning is based on Donny. Doncaster is a station I like to visit while I'm in the UK becouse there is always something going on down there. Wether it's a SWT 158 or a blue class 60, you will almost certainly see something you didn't expect. Furthermore it's a signallers nightmare with all those crossing movements blocking the station. A lot of IC, regional and local trafic plus a decent amount of freighters... And an occasionally runner like a Grand Central train to Sunderland or a EastCoast service to Aberdeen. Put the Wabtec works in the model layout and you get everything to give the people a stunning layout to look ad during Warley or the N gauge show.

What I want to include is a TFT screen displaying photos of the signalbox and panel to the public so they can see what it's like in real life. I have Three hours of station recordings already, but I want a few hundred announcements to play at an exhabition just before the train enters the station.

Sounds really good actually, anything that dares to be different is always one of the best!

Finally got around to starting mine. Like many, I am limited by space but that has not stopped me being fairly ambitious.

The track plan I have come up with models a medium sized station with through and terminating platforms, the junction outside the station and a small but well equipped TMD. It has been designed deliberately to be able to span a large time period and a large geographical area as I want to keep it as fresh as possible.

I have just set up a website. Not much on it at the moment as I have only just begun but i intend to update regularly and blog my work on the layout. Don't hesitate to have a quick look!

Looking good that, I've saved the website in my favourites as i'd like to keep up to date with proceedings.

Whens the last time you saw Bittern? I had a great encounter with her at the NRM in Early May, she was stationed there overnight en route to the NYMR. She was steaming up as I walked past the doors toward the back end of the museum and I got to speak with the Driver as he came inside the NRM for a toilet stop before pulling away....what a fantastic beautiful engine...she's become one of my favourite engines from such a close viewing.....i'll see if i can post a few pics up for you.

At the mo I'm planning a layout but it's not in york as I said earlier in another thread. No, this time it's in a countryside. I plan to have a small country station with small engines and two tunnels and a little shed. I'm also planning to use a peco background to give the layout a really bueatiful country feel.

That sounds like a good idea for a layout. How big will it be? The Peco backgrounds are quite good, the Gaugemaster ones are too.

It will be fairly small and I won't make a website. I'm currently building a plasticard building for it. i will be updating you guys about it.

Not a fan of model railways, costs too much money that could go towards playing with the real thing but im thinkng about doing a layout (sorta) of LA Depot and SY depot in the early 80s, if anyones got any gen on the real life layout that would be top, ta

also looking for a cheap ass models of 50001-50027 50037-50050 (the LA Allocated machines)
and 47026-47035 and any other locos that were LA and SY machines in the 80s
not fussed if they dont have a motor, just for show
