What's the provision for luggage like on GWR IETs?

I'm travelling Exeter to London next Thursday morning with suitcase. Are the overhead racks big enough or are there pens at the end of the carriage?

There is a lack of floor-level storage, but the overheads are massive, so as long as you can lift the bag above your head it will likely fit there.

If it's a suitcase you can put in an overhead in a plane, it'll easily fit in the overhead on an 80x unit. A million times better than a Voyager!

They could be better but yes, the overhead racks are huge and there's a larger rack at each end of most coaches

Two of us travelled from Swansea to Paddington with about 100kg of luggage between us and had no problem with luggage space on a class 800. Might have been an issue if the train had been full though!

Vastly so. In pretty much every way.
But not the vertical seats chiselled from the hardest material ever to be sat upon

Don’t get me wrong, technically they are impressive and they look great in GWR green…

Comfortable they are not.

You could always leave your luggage blocking the aisle like many people have to when the 5 car replaces the 9!

OK thanks, better than a Voyager then!
One positive thing about the voyager is it does have a large luggage area where the shop used to be at the end of one carriage. Does the 80x have anything like that? It was a good idea to reuse the space that way Instead of just cramming in 8 seats.

Another good thing about filling the overhead racks on the 800s is that they partly block out the sun which GWR seem to have installed in every carriage for illumination

Oh, and the bike spaces on the 800s seem to to be a fav place to dump luggage when the train is busy so don’t try to take one of those with you.

The bike spaces can be used for luggage as technically bikes should only be carried with a reservation

Not uncommon for people to stack the bike spaces with luggage from Paddington when a bike is booked on from (say) Reading, though!
