As mentioned above, some of the FTPE railcard with extra discount advances are wonderful. Manchester - Barrow-in-Furness for roughly £3, and you can usually get them within a week of travel. Some of Northern's rangers/rovers are also brilliant value.

But the best travel deal I've got ever was Megabus, not megatrain. Scotch Corner - London for 50p booking fee only!

A few months ago, I went for a day out from Barking in East London to Manchester Piccadilly and back again for around £19 return using my TFL staff pass then priv with splits bought on the day using various combinations of tickets.

Barking to Blackhorse Road (TFL staff pass)
Blackhorse Road to Euston (TFL staff pass)
Euston - Milton Keynes - Rugby - Coventry - Bham new street - Stoke on Trent - Manchester Piccadilly (split using priv)

Ha, this must've been the £0.05 first open day return from Cardiff Central - London, as part of FGW's weekend offer for season ticket holders*.

* Or, those people who bought cheap season tickets in order to use the offer.

Aberdeen-Stevenage £48 return, first class. The cheapest second class was an OPR at £60-70 with my YPR

Not sure how, but I managed to make NRE give me Coventry-Salisbury via Newport (!) for under £5, about three days in advance. This is without splitting, without even asking the search engine to go via anywhere. Unfortunately I managed to lose it and had to get the £16-ish via Olympia.

I have no idea when it comes to finding the cheapest tickets. I was actually impressed that Waterloo-Bournemouth first class single was £11.20 (standard was £13.15 on the same train ), but the other posts in this thread make that look extortionate.

I got a 16-25 Railcard discounted Advance fare with WSMR in their heyday between Wrexham and Marylebone. It was probably the best value ticket I've bought on the food offering alone!
