TPE are stopping a couple of Liverpool-Newcastle services at Thirsk "due to an unusually large passenger flow." Is there any particular reason for this?

There doesn't seem to be any racing on, that would have been my first thought, so count that one out.

I love the statement that comes out about "unsually large passenger flow". Northern & TPE seem suprised when events are happening in the North East and more people are using the train than normal!
See how they cope today. Feel sorry for anybody trying to travel on the York services from Middlesbrough this morining and every Saturday morning. But they can't put extra coaches on they say becasue Yarm station isn't long enough. Well have a bit of balls and stop at Eaglescliffe!

Not sure why you think the TOCs are surprised. Aren't they doing the right thing, within the constraints of their operation, by stopping extra trains?

I was meaning in terms of why they didnt plan for it in the 1st place. We all have details of when York races is on and not once as extra carridges been found for Middlesbrough services. But if there needed between York & Manchester, by magic they find some. :(

Yeah your righ though I should be happy to see them acting upon it, but it seems to late when they do something about it. Always seems to be for everyone returning from events, they dont seem to think about how many people are going in the 1st place. Sorry

Do TPE have rights to call at Eaglescliffe, if not then they can't.

I think "unusually large passenger flow" is a pre-set option in the Nexus Alpha system that TPE and Northern use and it actually means they are expecting a large number of passengers and have changed the usual calling pattern or number of carriages to accommodate the extra passengers. If they were surprised by extra passengers then you'll have 100 or so passengers waiting an hour for the next service because provision hasn't been made to accommodate the extra passengers, as was the case with Northern services around the Manchester area on the last Saturday in November last year.

They cannot just stop at a station they have never call at, it's got nothing to do with balls.

Even for late notice stops such as these, would Grand Central be happy at potentially losing revenue to TPE? Although some would think of Pot, Kettle, Black in that situation. :D

Even Northern to some extent.
