Everyone's eyes are on Euston right now, but as a very frequent user of Liverpool Street (living on the Lea Valley Lines), the experience there has also fallen off in recent times. Travelling in on the Overground, there now appears to be a scheduled halt outside the platform at all times of day, which was never previously the case as recently as last month. I have looked ahead in the schedule as far as December (after the regular national timetable update) and the halt appears to be permanent. Are there now permanently less platforms in use on the West Anglia side of the station?
It only adds a few minutes onto the journey time, but this random change is very frustrating as my local station and area (Rectory Road) is completely devoid of other fast and reliable links into Central London, particularly with the general fall off of inner London bus services with the widespread implementation of 20mph speed limits and frequency cuts. A 4tph service was hardly adequate to start with, but at least until recently it got me into the City without delay. The scheduled journey time used to be 14 minutes, usually taking slightly less in practice, but is now 15-17 minutes taking as long as 20 minutes during the morning peak. This might seem insignificant but I just find it insane that there is such thing as a permanent increase in journey time anywhere in 2024.
The northbound journey has also been affected negatively since the start of this week, with all trains using the slow line as far north as Hackney Downs. This is a particular problem for the xx03/18/33/48 Chingford departures, which are now stuck right behind the stopping Enfield/Cheshunt departures (leaving 3 minutes earlier) for four stations, somewhat defeating the purpose of the express calling pattern they've always had. I'm guessing this issue is in connection with the broken rail earlier this week, but it seems misleading how GA and LO have repeatedly stated 'services are no longer affected by this problem' when there are now operational differences with before that again increase journey time.
I appreciate these problems are minor compared to what a lot of people in the UK are going through with their rail services, but I know there are very knowedgeble people on this forum (speaking as a current outsider to the industry myself) who may have answers as to why the quality of my local rail services has decreased. Answers would be appreciated?
