If you could go back in time and have a choice, which locos would you have saved from the cutters torch?

Ive got a rather big list, but i'll say 3 for the time being

A3 No. 60062 "Minoru" for obvious reasons
The U1 Wath Banker Garrat
About a dozen Black 5's

But lets hear who you would have saved

EDIT: Did not know where to put this, this section seemed most appropriate

I would save at least one of every class produced, either as a warning or to show what it was like to enthusiasts who would otherwise have never seen or heard it

More of the Multiple units such as the early 400s, 410s (and 421, 423s) (since next to none of those were saved  ), but then again most people just want to preserve the 37s!

"Sir William A Stanier FRS". Yes, I know there are other Coronations in preservation (though none in steam right now), but this was the one of the two final improved versions and it carrird the name of the top CME of all time. :D

Absolutely. I'd also have saved Silver Link - the pioneer A4 (though I would have been tempted to save Silver Fox, if only because of the badge :)) . Equally, it would've been nice to have preserved Great Northern before it was 'rebuilt', for similar reasons.

Any Patriot would've been good, too...

Some of the diesel prototypes, 10000 or 10001, 10100, 10201/10202/10203, 10800, DP2 (even though it was badly damaged in an accident), HS4000 KESTREL, LION, FALCON plus any others I haven't mentioned.

More 303s.

Once such a common sight but now only one survives and will probably never work under her own power ever again, unless NR allow her to be out and about on their network.

On that note, 303s are cleared on the new A-B line, which is surprising considering they were withdrawn in 2002 and the line opened in 2010. Sign of things to come, perhaps?

And deltics are on of the few classes of loco cleared for the 'lift' bridge at Greenwich, although I doubt a deltic has ever been there.

It's quite interesting, isn't it? Why are they clearing locos and units which are no longer in mainline use? The Deltic I can somewhat understand as even in preservation they pop up on the mainline often (at least 2 are registered, no?).

The clearing of the 303s however...

Same, I would've saved a Cep, Cig and a Vep. I bloody adore the slamdoors, and always will. :)

I would have kept a fleet of 312s fitted with central locking as the HSTs and the Bubble Cars with Chiltern and Arriva Trains Wales do and have them in a standard Blue Grey livery.

Together with a fleet of 210s but re-engineered with a Sprinter type engine system so more seats available.

I'm sure there's a few more I can think of eventually.......

Well if I was to think steam then either a GW Class517 or Grange or maybe another dean goods or an Aberdare. For this you could substitute any 4 none flash work horses from the LMS, SR or LNER. although I would like a 77XXX.

Getting newer one of the prototype diesels like DP2 or 10000.

Though top of my list is a Class 151 DMU and one of the prototype Class 150 dmus.

:D

The Class 124 Transpennine DMU, they were quite something at the time. One day in 1984 they were dumped at Dairycoates, next day they were gone. Did the NYMR save a couple of the buffet cars though, if so what happened to them?.
Also Class 103 once part of the North Wales scene.

Agree. I can't remeber the specific unit number but a preserved 4VEP had to be scrapped due to vandals taking parts from it. I also agree on the Cl37s there are to many of them around!

I would of saved a 4REP, they were known for being VERY powerful EMUs and none were saved, there traction equipment was given second hand and passed down to the 442s which actually hold the record for being the fastest 3rd rail EMUs which isn't a suprise considering on how powerful the REPs were.

I would of also saved a 4SUB and more EPBs. The only EPB I have seen in preservation at work is 2EPB 5759 at the EKR, and as for the 4SUBs theres one of them at the NRM (I think?) and none in preservation at work. Although I don't know what the future is for the SUB motor coaches that EMT used as a staff room at one of there depots. One EPB, 5001, could of been saved but it was stored for a while but no one showed any interest and it was sadly scrapped...

Thanks for info, You've just jogged my memory, about the 'elsewhere' 103. It's at Aberwheeler Nurseries at Bodfari near Denbigh. It was to have been used on the abortive Mold to Denbigh railway preservation scheme. It can be seen from the main road, single vehicle only don't know if it is a driver or a trailer.

4REPs were said to be the Deltics of the Southern, from Karl L's dad.

As far as I remember the TP units were full of Asbestos which was why none were saved.

I would save a P2, so we didn't have to worry about building one.

One of the streamlined front end ones.

If money was no object the 210 and 151 units - but not for dumping on some scrap railway, but spot hire on the main network

Oh be still my beating heart, imagine some or all of that lot lined up at a diesel gala somewhere today... :D

Alas it was never to be, as both Lion and Falcon were disposed of due to contractual obligations, once withdrawn they were not to be sold on as working locomotives to any party, and scrapped as soon as possible. I think Lion only lasted two or three years before getting the chop but I was lucky enough to see Falcon several times on the WR at Padd, Reading, Didcot, Swindon and Bristol, before it was sent to Ebbw Junction. Imagine the 'pull' it would have now as a guest loco at various pres lines...

My choices for things worth to be saving... Old Oak Common MPD, a 68xx Grange, one or possibly two of the Blue Pullman sets (ie: a Midland set and a Western set), a D6xx, a D63xx, a North British D8xx Warship, amongst others!

Nidge ;)
