Based on a query i heard very many years ago, what will cartoon characters in the comics be like when they grow up? Dennis the Menace and Beryl the Peril spring to mind as examples.

I can't see it though as I don't have threads, but I do remember another (or perhaps the same!) cartoonist in The Guardian drawing a cartoon of various cartoon characters, asking the question 'Where are they now?' Tin Tin was a DJ playing obscure Belgian techno. Noddy was a gay pride pin up type and drove a 4x4 (because he bloody can). I'm forgetting the name of the character who was an Ali G type, with his (accidentally) pregnant girlfriend. This would have been circa 2005. Or was it The Times? I used to read both to an extent. I wonder if anybody can find it? It seems not to be tagged, or tagged very well, so it's a bit like grepping dead trees, assuming it was The Guardian. The piece would probably itself be regarded as very much of its time now.

Steve Bell had a go with those too, spread over a week of his strips in the Guardian sometime in the 80's.
As I recall, Namby Pamby (a spoof Andy Pandy) supported by his Auntie Maggie (Thatcher) set up a sweatshop at the bottom of the garden where the fairies, and Bill and Ben, were employed in exploitative conditions.
Bill and Ben set up a union and led a strike, leading to Namby Pamby calling in PC Plod. Bill and Ben were deported back to Flowerpotland and the Weed was taken away to be analysed.

I think they all grew up and became characters in Viz magazine such as Fru T Bun, Eight Ace and The Real Ale ****s. The Broons certainly appear in Viz as the Broon Windsors, a braw Scottish version of the Royal Family. It's a wonder DC Thompson didn't sue on that one.
