The daily Liverpool-Edinburgh was a two-car 158 in the early days of VT.

Express livery but without Express branding.

The interior had red-ish pink seats (otherwise original seat type and layout), a small 2+1 First Class, an onboard trolley service, and a pay phone which took phone-cards and really gobbled up your units if you tried to use it.
Diagrams included Edinburgh - Liverpool, then Liverpool - Portsmouth southbound, Portsmouth-Liverpool the Liverpool - Edinburgh northbound - 2 coach 158, until replaced by Voyagers which could be either a 220 or 221.

It was a very curious portion working setup. The Manchester ran from Manchester Airport coupled to a Regional Railways 156 bound for Barrow/Windermere (forget which) splitting at Bolton with the 156 going via Westhoughton and Wigan, the 158 then joined with the Liverpool portion at Preston to head to Scotland. I forget now if both bits went to Edinburgh or it was a Glasgow split.
