I was speaking to my Grandparents earlier today who said that they had seen a train that appeared to have been rescue after breaking down on the ECML. They said that there was a diesel at the front so I assumed it must have been a failed 225 or HST set. However, my Grandma mentioned four carriages and then another four carriages (what was between them I don't know). She also thought they were in Virgin Trains livery and apparently it was going quite fast.

Now they aren't rail enthusiasts so it may well be it was just a normal Virgin Trains set being rescued by a Thunderbird, but is anyone aware of an unusual movements that may be similar to this description? I thought it was worth asking in case there was a strange working today. :D

Many thanks

Ryan

As well as what was it, where was it? The ECML stretches from Edinburgh to Kings Cross.

Is there still a HST set running around with a mix of VTEC and EMT liveried coaches?

There was a unit drag to Tonbridge (465/9 + 2 barrier coaches) behind 66708. Other than that I don't know, only a Colas 37 and a few Network Rail coaches but neither explain the virgin livery

Could be an EWS EMU drag with a former vxc mk2 as a barrier wagon

Then again haven't they just created some new barrier wagons out of a scrap PEP based unit?

Thanks for the replies guys. I wouldn't read too much into the Virgin livery comment as they may think that if it was red. My Grandad thought that East Coast had got new trains when the 225's were painted grey, bless him.

Looking at what you've all said, I'd say it was either the EMU movement with barrier wagons or maybe a HST set with EMT power cars and maybe trailers in different liveries.

Was that Gatwick Express drag serious or a joke given the ongoing withdrawal of the 442's and the love they get on this forum? :D

It can't be that one as they were telling me about it before 4pm and that didn't get into Retford until shortly before 5.
