Hi all,

Title says it all really. A simple (and no doubt daft) question, but for the avoidance of doubt, what time does an Anytime Day Return expire? I seem to recall it's something like 04:00 the following morning, but if someone could confirm please.

Thanks.

All tickets (with the exception of some PTE tickets) expire at 04:29 the morning after the expiry date.

To be precise they are valid until 0429. They expire when the clock ticks over to 0430.

What if you pass the ticket barriers before 04.29 but the train is timetabled to depart between 4.30-5am but already in service?

Validity is when you board the train, not when you pass the barrier. Barriers are not relevant when discussing validity.

Actually the conditions of some PTE tickets give passing the barrier more significance than boarding the train or ferry.

Theoretically.
I have a query that is not explicitly answered after a search led me to this thread.
If I wanted to get an early flight from Gatwick at 0600 tomorrow morning, is it legitimate to buy a Railcard-discounted Off-Peak Return FROM Gatwick to Harpenden (my origin station) dated today, so that I can use the return portion to make a journey after midnight, to Gatwick?

This is a cheaper ticket than an Anytime Single dated tomorrow!

If so, what is the final departure from Harpenden on which the RTN portion will be valid?

The 'theoretical' remark above implies you can finish your journey after 04:29

I thought you could continue to travel but not make any further break of journey?
I like your thinking, but if that were true, wouldn't a person starting work at, say, 05:30 use this ruse to get a cheap ticket valid on the 04:28 service from their local station?

The validity is "DATE ON TICKET UNTIL 0429 THE NEXT MORNING"*. This looks pretty clear that travel must be completed by that time. However, as Yorkie has stated above, discretion would be shown in the event of trains being delayed as long as they are timetabled to allow travel that adheres to the restriction.

Just imagine the outcry if someone was Penalty Fared because a train scheduled to arrive at 04:15 ran 35 minutes late and the barriers alerted an overzealous RPI

Perhaps. But equally, if it weren't true then when I travel down from Scotland on the sleeper wouldn't I have to be turfed out at Preston? (Single tickets bear the date of the start of the journey.)

I would suggest that any ticket restrictions, to any meaningful level, apply to the timetable and not the actual time. So if you're on a train scheduled to arrive at or before 04:29, or you're waiting on a platform and the next, delayed, train is so timed, you're fine.

However, I did think, though possibly may be wrong but I don't think I am, that if there isn't disruption the 04:30 is absolute, as it changed from 02:[something] with ability to continue a journey already started, to absolute 04:30.

Re the original question, AIUI the final departure is the one that arrives at Gatwick before and including 04:29. Which is probably about right for an 06:00 flight.

Validity expires at 0429 and all travel must be completed by then.

Obviously if the train was delayed and the journey could not be completed by then solely due to the delay then the passenger would not be penalised.

why??

You can't get a day return on the sleepers can you?
It's only day returns that expire at 0430

Belfast to Penzance is issued as an Anytime Day Single (SDS) and is valid on both Caledonian Sleeper and Night Riviera.

Could I suppose be that you're travelling on the last day of validity of the ticket where that does apply too.
Not quite sure what you are alluding to, but if you are referring to the last day of validity of an Anytime Single or Return the wording is quite clear:
NRE Knowledgebase said:
Return portions of Anytime Return tickets are valid for travel until 04:29 in the early morning following the last day of validity (i.e. one calendar month from outward journey). All travel must be completed by this time.
