What tickets do I have to carry?

I was returning today from Leuchars to Inverkeithing on the LNER using a Fife concessionary card. I produced when asked my return ticket and card, but the inspector then wanted to se the out ticket. Fortunately I had kept this, but on another day, I might well have thrown it away. Is it a requirement to produce both tickets? I can't recall ever being asked to do this before

It’s technically a requirement to have an unmarked return portion when presenting an outward portion, but not the reverse.

It is not a requirement, not least because the outward portion would be retained by the barriers at many stations, but if it is the LNER person I think it is I am not surprised they said that.

Interesting that you say that. I think I recognised this individual from doing the same journey a week or so ago, interacting with a customer struggling to get off at Inverkeithing due to the selective door opening.

Given that tickets are frequently consumed by exit barriers, a requirement to carry the outward ticket on the return journey would not be workable.

@jadmor I would certainly write to LNER customer services about this incident, as the individual concerned needs to be spoken to. The company should issue a memo, reminding staff that there is no requirement to produce an outward portion, when using a return portion of a ticket.
