What ticket type? DB Leipzig query

Will be in Leipzig in February and will be getting the train from Leipzig/Halle airport to the city centre. Looking on the DB app, there’s different options for tickets.

My question is, which ticket should I purchase for full flexibility on the day? I don’t want to be restricted to ICE or S-Bahn, I want to jump on the first train that takes me to the city centre rather than wait for a train my ticket covers me for. I want a ticket that allows me to jump on any train to Leipzig Hbf.

I take it there are ticket machines in the station and we can just buy them on the day? Or can you buy a ticket on the train itself?

There will be ticket machines at the station, and you can press the Union Flag to change the language to English if required. Or you could buy them on the DB app and show them on your phone.

there are only two S-Bahns to Leipzig Hbf per hour, and an IC I guess every second hour, the airport is rather small.
Tickets for the S-Bahn are not valid on the ICs...

Seems to me yet another case where we have to explain the Brits how Verbund Tarif works: by zones, and from ANY transport stop-also next to your HTL in L till end=airport, cannot buy advance, as valid for a certain nr of hrs, just use cash on machine. This EXcludes using the IC-trains-only on the S-bahn, that will also stop in the several stations in tunnel under centre L. Airport will be out of city-zone L-just press buttons as above-or perhaps, if wanting to use tram etc more before during visit, enquire about 24-hr or daytickets, that may end just after you reach airpt.
Much similar to how once these PTEś had fare systems.
This is assuming you stay in L the day before, if coming from further that day: just buy ticket all the way.
It works like this to about any airpt in Germany, except the very few (Ryan!) that are way outside urban areas, like Memmingen or Hahn. These will have dedicated special expensive private buses transfers.

Note you can use the DB Navigator app to buy tickets (it gives you a QR code), also for the local S-Bahn trains (the ticket machines can sometimes refuse certain credit cards), but you will need to wait until you arrive to do this.
You do need to buy a ticket before you actually get on the train, the fine is up to €60 otherwise.

If you want to use all transport including the (S-Bahn) train from the airport, then you can buy a single ticket for €5.40 or a 24 hour ticket for €12.40. You can download Moovme app, which offers tickets, nearest stop finder, travel planning and real time information, and buy the 24 hour ticket on that - no need to purchase a paper ticket (unless you want to). The €7.20 ticket on the IC train really is not worth it and will not be valid on any other form of transportation. You can buy the tickets using the DB app as well, but it doesn't have some of the functionality that the Moovme app has. Moovme accepts Paypal and Credit Cards.

As previously noted, you will have a lot of time to wait at Leipzig airport in which to acquire tickets: there aren't many trains (or planes!) It was built on a huge scale, anticipating long term growth....

Yes, it's a freight hub, it is one of the few airports with 24/7 operations...

We have couriers that fly to Leipzig -Halle for Leipzig city. Last update from them was in 2019. The station is some way from the airport terminal reached by a covered bridge. There is a staffed DB kiosk above the station and at least one ticket machine on the platform. If the kiosk is staffed they'll tell you which train is next and what the appropriate ticket is. No waiting room on the platform so you may prefer to wait in shelter on the bridge. Most DB machines these days seem to take credit cards, even in the former DDR. A 3-zone ticket from the Local Transport Association part of the machine's screen gets you to Leipzig Hbf by S-Bahn and then on to any stop on the city's local transport network, including the stations on the S-bahn tunnel through the city. Valid for 2-hours, but for single journeys only, not return trips. Cost around €6 taking 15-20 mins to the Hbf.

I'm currently in Leipzig with a companion having just spent the night in the Ibis City near Hbf. I flew from Edinburgh via Frankfurt yesterday.

It is my first time in East Germany. Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Mainz and Munich are the only German cities I know well.

I'm spending the next three nights in Dresden. Haven't decided if it is possible to go to Weimar as well yet. I have investigated the Sachsen Ticket which I think is valid between 9am and 3pm and is €35 for two people.

Valid until 3 AM the next day. And only valid in regional trains. During weekends, you can also travel before 9AM. Also see:

If you want to go to Weimar (it's a fair way from Dresden, and 3h+ journey time) then there is a choice of routes - via Chemnitz and via Leipzig - both with some nice scenery, and covered by the regional ticket.
