What secrets lie within our stations?

There use to be an entrance to the deep level shelter at Goodge Street Stn at platform level. It has now been concealed but as a former Stn supervisor at that very station I always found it interesting to know what went on behind that closed door.

Another Birmingham one. On Platform 1 at Moor Street station, near the waiting room at the city end of the platform (the far end of this photo) there is a door in the wall.

Behind the door is a staircase to the mouths of the Stour and Derby tunnels at New Street station. You can clearly see it on Bing maps birds eye view of the station, but it just looks like a door to nowhere from platform level. The door is always locked by the way.

Personally I'd love to believe that in the wall behind platform 6 the rest of the proper Man Vic is still there... No chance of that, or the hope that the old tunnels are still there which used to lead to the platforms.

Which reminds me, and I have undoubtedly mentioned it before, but the old Western island platform at Sunderland station is still in situ behind the new screen wall that was put in when the Metro extension was being put in place. In fact, the current screen wall (that now features the "light wall" installation) stands on the edge of the out of use platform.

no doubt it's been fixed now, but we used to hold meetings upstairs in Kings Cross West side offices in the 1980s, part of the roof was completely missing, presumably due to WWII bomb damage

Yes.


Look in the slow line 6' towards the south end of the current station building, there are two catch pits about 20' apart the subway ran between them.

There is also a dip in the surface of the middle platform where the fill has subsided.

Have always wondered what is in the building on the central platform at Rugby (not ground floor, up above)

I thought the top floor was sleeping accomodation, for staff lodging away from home.

It was indeed, and was always known as 'The Bomb Gap'.
