Currently looking after two cats for a couple of months, going to miss them when they go home, even if one is currently trying to break into the treat drawer!

There’s also a cat who lives a couple of doors down but likes to think the house is hers. We made her a little box in the garden with a cushion in to keep her cosy and dry now that she can’t come in with the other two around.
I caught the very first cat of my own, as opposed to those of my parents, at 2 a.m. sitting next to a fish tank with tropical fish inside that we were looking after for a neighbour, trying to work out how to raise the top cover and put his paw inside to have an early breakfast. He was most put out when I weighed down the top! My absolute favourite cat of the ten that I've been fortunate enough to share my life with, though it's been fifteen years since the last one departed.

Juke - 1st day at home.jpg

Meet Juke - this was taken the first day we got him from Battersea last December, 15 months old. He's the third GSD we've owned and settling in nicely.

Other pets.....

11 Snakes, from a Baird rat snake to a 8' 6" Boa Constrictor. Here's a picture of my first Blue Eyed Lucy (Super Lesser) Royal Python I hatched three years ago.

Thanks! It reminds me of when our next-door-neighbour had a huge (to us seven-year-olds) Alsatian, as we called them then, called Oscar. When, inevitably, our ball got kicked over the wall, we did not dare get it if he was in the garden as he ran around and barked a lot, so we had to wait till his owner took him for a walk. One day, when we thought he was out, I jumped over the wall - but he was asleep behind a bush! I got licked to death!

Lovely picture of the dog, though I’m not sure about the snake! What’s a GSD? I assume D stands for dog.
Thanks,

Our first German Shepherd can be seen in my avatar, and this was our second, again a rescue from Battersea Dogs Home

LOL - they aren't all land sharks :)

Daft question, maybe, but can they be affectionate like cats (on a good day) and dogs?

Nope... But some species seem to recognise individuals within a family, and will seek them out and interact with them. Most, despite being captive bred for decades are still in essence wild animals. Having said that, most lack the attitude of a wild caught specimen. I've been bitten twice in 36 years by adult snakes, both were Royal pythons, and both my fault. A few pin pricks, and a little bruising. Wouldn't want to take one from the boa, I took this after he had just finished a meal. His gape is bigger than my hand span... four rows of teeth on the top and two on the bottom, all sheathed, the longest about 7mm

Fortunately most of the snake I have are used to the comings and goings, and being handled for cleaning of their enclosures etc and he's never showed any aggression. But you can't get complacent, and that's when accidents happen, similar with any animal really.

Your snake is quite beautiful, I love the slightly pink undertone.

How did you purchase the egg? Was it from a snake you previously had/have?

I keep seeing pictures and videos of Hognoses and I really have to resist the urge to get involved in keeping what appears to be one of the most adorably dumb animals on Earth.

And one that is mid-fanged and although not listed as a DWAL requirement a bit that results in envenomation can land you for a day in A&E. On the plus side most envenomation bites are feeding related, where the wee darling mistook your finger / hand for a nice warm mouse, and most defensive bites are dry. But they are know for having one of the strongest food drives of most captive snakes..

Thanks. I didn't buy any eggs... I paired up a male Lesser Platinum to a Lesser Pastel female. She fell gravid and gave me 9 large eggs which I incubated in a home built incubator and was lucky enough to get a Super Lesser (BEL) female out of the clutch.

Here's the sire

And this is the Dame

The incubation period is typically 55-60 days, but as it was day 66 and no sign of pipping, I opted to carefully cut the eggs... this was the moment that I discovered that the odds were in my favour

She made her own way out of the egg a few days later
