It is inevitable that there will be some changes in railway policy as a result of the economic conditions we face. No idea what that will be though, and whether it affects HS2 or not!

The value of Government Transport positions in the UK was summed up very well in Yes Minister's episode "Bed of Nails" back in 1982. The episode centred around creating the position of "Transport Supremo", the position being set up purely for political show, with the stated objective being - "to create lots of activity, but no actual achievement".

The scriptwriting in the show was remarkably perceptive, in fact Yes Minister has been widely credited with the invention of the term "Integrated Transport Policy". Forty years on, here we have the Eastern Leg of HS2 shelved, and all the appearance of having only ever been a scheme with "lots of activity but no actual achievement".

The similarities between the fictitious Transport Supremo of 1982 and today's Transport SoS really are are quite striking. A few months after the new PM has appointed the new Transport SoS, let's see what he /she has achieved and if I'm wrong. I'll happily eat my words publicly if so :D

Yes Minister, but that was then; things are different now- we have learned from history ;)


Not the Supremo sketch but not dissimilar- 'we are the government !!' Nothing changes then or now.
