I have found acer do AMD models - but they're sempron - which have half the cache of an AMD Athlon XP, so I may go for new PC parts instead - abit nf7 v2 motherboard and athlon xp 3200+

Compair XP with Windows ME and it is the worlds securest thing.... Actually, It is not too secure on some stuff. IE Microsoft DOS wont work on here, it justs locks me up :roll:

Windows XP doesn't have DOS, it has 'Command Prompt', a DOS simulator.

I agree on windows 3.x being more secure than xp! Bill Gates probably still runs it - it was the only decent thing him and his cronies created.
I did want Gareth did with the DOS prompt, put a copy of it directly under C: and you have a perfect DOS simulator rather than the C:\Documents and Settings\your name here\blah blah which doesn't allow you to go directly to C: like DOS did. If I had a choice I wouldn't use windows but it's just too much to leave as its the only thing that seems to the be 100% compatible with everything. You know what I mean? not like WINE works under linux particularly well!

In a nutshell, I think you've summed up Windoze's dominant market position - it's been there so long that now, even with much better alternatives such at Linux so many things lean towards Windoze it's hard to change. Although, over time, and with increasing popularity of open source material ported to different platforms, things may change. Still, has anyone got BVE working on Linux yet?

BVE on linux, hmm would be interesting, if I setup a full time linux partition anytime soon (which I may well do to try and use the full capability of my new PC and to try and make the switch away from windoze) I'll give it ago!

Someone managed BVE2, but BVE4 may be trickier as it needs .net.

hmm BVE2 shouldn't be a problem, but trying to find some port of .net for linux is going to be difficult and I hadn't actually thought about that! Bugger, I've struck a problem there!

BVE2 runs fine on Linux, done it meself, got it running on Mac too.

BVE4, manage to get it running for a few minutes then it crashes, have a screenshot to prove it somewhere.

hmmm my low knowledge of linux apart from the "poweroff" command means that is going to take some time to do!
