What is your favourite train?

Well? Favourite class, locomotive/unit and livery? Why?

This is mine. I can remember reading (mostly looking at the pictures) a book on Deltics as a ten year old and although they were never in service in my living memory, the book portrayed them almost as living entities (and I rather like the look of them). This one was my favourite and in this livery for no other reason than I like the name.

Comfortable padded seats, nice design inside/outside, smooth ride, good speed, not overly noisy, plug sockets & Wi-Fi, onboard information screens.

A solid 'modern' train.

Yes, this is my era tbf. Stood behind the fence at Durham being deafened as the rear power car started kicking off. Also have a good deal of nostalgia for the thumping 56's that used to work the coal trains local to me.

I didn't actually hear a deltic for the first time until around the very late 90's when a railtour passed me somewhere along the Skerne (don't ask). It was a strange one, not what I expected and was disappointed at first but it kind of grew on me.

Class 360/1! They are my childhood train, when I went train-spotting I would always see one, along with many other memories of them.

In terms of livery, it would be 745 GA, 385 ScotRail, TPE 802 and 313 SilverLink because of the way they flow.

The class 76 in black invokes memories of the first time I saw a 'train'. I'm talking just past nappy age Whether it was something from a Ladybird book or the old Tuthill quarry shunter, I'll never know...

If I had to pick a favourite unit, it would the class 156. I loved the 158 when it was new but think the 156's have aged better.

ScotRail's Inverness-based Class 158s. If you could have a Scenic-refurbed one of those in First ScotRail's Barbie livery, then that would be the dream.

Class N7 0-6-2T, watched & rode behind them, pulling the Air-braked articulated stock on the Chingford branch in my youth.
Probably one of the best Suburban tankies ever built, perfect for the Chingford & Enfield "Jazz" services.

A little more "up-to-date" I'd choose the BR "77"'s, not in the UK but as the "1500's" after being sold to N.S.
Why, well I was courting my wife-to-be at the time & she lived near Den Haag....

Class 101 for me. Common round Leeds so I used them a lot. And as you say, the view from the front.
But HST were the iconic trains of the 70's, and saved Inter City travel in the UK

Today. a 350. Nice comfy 'proper' trains.

Ah - I did a ”driver experience” on the Nene Valley. So not very representative of mainline working conditions.

Looking forward to seeing them be fitted with ETCS!

The class 700s are class, and the 68s sound really decent during the night at Huddersfield.

For all their faults, I do have a soft spot for them - love hearing the sintered brake pads when they pull in. The fact that it’s my 5 year old son’s favourite train seals it - he asked me once, “daddy, why does it have a Meridian’s engine in it?”

Finally, if I had to state a specific train, it would have to be 180110 - uniqueness of it currently being a 4-car unit and that it was my son’s first 180.

Ah yes....the ex-LSWR 0-6-0 goods engines! As a very young child (aged 5 perhaps?), I remember seeing one on the Meon Valley (Fratton-Droxford) freight trip while staying with friends of my parents near Wickham.

Always liked the obscure stuff. Class 151 - rode it to Matlock on test years ago, Class 89, Class 124 and Class 502 all stand out. The latter in LMS red was a great livery. Cornish 142 brown looked good and NSE on a 50 was so 80s.
