For the last few weeks there seems to have been a reluctance to use platform 3 at Preston. It is still used so presumably there isn’t a points or track fault but they seem to use any platform but 3 if they can.

Today, for example, the 15:17 – Euston was due to arrive at platform 4 and there were 2 northbound freights due at the same time. That always means the freights will be routed through P3, but the Euston service had a last minute platform change to P6 and the two freights went through P5. Also looking at RTT for today, all northbound Avanti services which usually use P3 have been re-platformed and the only Avanti services using P3 have been Blackpool – Euston.

As I said, this has been going on for at least a couple of weeks, is there a simple explanation?

There has been an issue with the routing through 3 from the south recently so it looks like they're diverting trains around it.

That explains it seeing as it does appear to be used for southbound services but not northbound, thanks.

Does the roof damage in the March storms have anything to do with it?

No it doesn't

Yes, trains are running south through platform 3. The fault affects the Down direction.

It’s to do with the signals in the up direction. I was on the 15:17 arrival it said platform 4 arrival until the very last second on national rail. So lots of northbound services are using 4 and southbound are using 6
