What is this?

Anybody know what this is? Sorry it isn't too clear.

Looks like a hand-operated valve, sluice, or something like that. Probably currently open, given the amount of the central shaft sticking out. Probably hasn't been closed in a long time, given the rust on the central shaft's threads. Probably something moderately big or heavy-ish, given the length of the operating arm.

All of the above is just a bunch of guesswork. Some context might help, or some additional angles/views of it.

Sounds plausible. I can get some more photos. It's at Leicester Station just past the north end of platform 3&4. The handle is indeed seized.

Is it for manual operation of points? I saw something similar being used at Great Yarmouth on Saturday when the 47 was running round the mk3 stock.

There are no points connected to it now. Maybe once.

I would guess that it is a pollution control valve to prevent the contents of a drainage gully from discharging into the environment in the event of a toxic spillage.

Does not look like it is being maintained does it?

It looks like the top half of some sort of gate valve. Given where it is, perhaps to do with the former water columns used to replenish steam engines???
