What is the purpose of this service?

Hi all,
I've seen on RTT a train running as empty coaching stock from Manchester Piccadilly to Delamere, going to Chester first and reversing, then a new service as Unadvertised Ordinary Passenger from Delamere to Manchester Piccadilly, and it does look like it actually ran yesterday and is planned for today:
