There is also a classification within Hitachi for the "IEP"s being the 800s and 801s ordered via Agility by the DfT l. And the "WoE" Class 802 sets ordered via a traditional ROSCO.
(West if England) and (Rolling Stock Operating Company)

The name Intercity Express Programme is for the procurement programme originally launched and run by the Department for Transport. Many units such as the GWR 'West of England' class 802s, Hull Trains' fleet, etc are not really a part of this. The Lumo ones have some slightly greater technical differences. The EMR ones will be quite different again.

The name 'Intercity Express Train' is only for GWR's units. There are others are called Nova 1, Paragon, Aurora and Azuma, for example.

Hitachi used the name Super Express Train for a while but that wasn't particularly popular. They then became known as AT300, part of the A Train family.

IEP is the name of the DfT contract that covered the purchase of Hitachi class 800 and 801 operating with GWR and LNER, and their maintenance regime over 27.5 years.

Subsequently, more class 80x were procured and financed differently and have different maintenance regimes (though maintained at the same depots as IEP trains).

First Group led the procurement of class 802 for GWR (separate to the IEP order), Hull Trains and TPE, and 804 for Lumo and 805/7 for Avanti. Abellio led the procurement of class 810 for EMR.

They are all nominally from Hitachi's AT300 range.

How the individual TOCs brand their trains (IET, Azuma etc) are local marketing initiatives which I'm not sure will last, as the variations between the classes are relatively minor.

Have to disagree. The IEP was established as a follow on from HST2. The IETs are the production development of the IEP but as they are all of Hitachi build they are all from the Intercity Express Programmeso are IETs, irrespective of whether they are for Agility East, Agliity West or the other Roscos involved.

Your suggestion is effectively like trying to say that an MML HST is not a HST because it wasn't ordered for the MML.

I think that you've misunderstood. Intercity Express Train is just one of the names given by the operators to substantially the same train itself. There are many others quoted above. It's just like the name Voyager was for example. A 222 was substantially the same but they're not a Voyager because their operators dubbed them something different.
