Been there, done that. Then one day I just thought "sod it" and went and sat there. I didnt get my head bitten off so have done it ever since .
I have even been known to deliberately ask somebody to move a bag when there are empty seats beside other people (unless one of them is blonde, but thats a different story ) just to wind them up a bit

Got the lappy out so the kids could watch a film and plonked it down on top of all the paperwork she had covering the whole table

To be fair, I've often had a lot of work to do whilst travelling long distances and have booked table seats specifically so I can get my work done. If somebody plonked a laptop on top of my work I wouldn't be best pleased.

I do think people who take table seats to themselves are extremely selfish though. When travelling with the family (the 4 of us) we have had to sit in separate airline seats many times simply because one person has been at a table. This can be particularly annoying on trains like XC Voyagers and FGW HSTs as tables are at a premium. Meanwhile, the comment about reservations isn't entirely practical. We often travel on Northern as they are the main operator round here, and they don't allow seat reservations.

When travelling alone I tend to take a table seat if the train is quiet, and offer to move if a large group turns up.

Which is fair enough, but this was just odd bits of course work scattered around and unless she was doing "research" as a fashion designer the magazine she was reading made it clear that she was merely (trying to) marking her territory.
