I know we are straying a bit off topic here, but you seem to indicate that the new trains will solve the overcrowding on TPE?
Over the last few weeks I have travelled quite frequently from Northallerton to Manchester Airport and Liverpool and back at various times of the day. The trains fortunately have in general been formed of two units making 6 carriages in total.
Upon boarding at Northallerton the trains have been what I describe as 'comfortably full' ie busy but I could get a seat. After more pax got on at Thirsk and York they were almost fully loaded. Leaving Leeds it was generally 'sardine class' with a lot of people standing.
The same was true on the return journeys, ie on the Manchester to Leeds leg the six car units were standing only before thinning out a bit at Leeds and again at York leaving the trains comfortably full.
So, if that is the current state of play with six carriages, heaven help us when the new 5 carriage trains take over.
Even travelling in First on a few journeys I found this area somewhat 'oversubscribed' with pax having to stand. I can only imagine 'First' was full in the other unit as some people changed between units at Huddersfield only to find the First class in my half of the train was just as full as First (and standard) in the other unit!.

Used to be forces types who had 'em but over the last ten years or so "tramp stamps" and piercings have proliferated starting with earrings and copying the Asian nose Stud to all sorts of things
It is their bodies but I do find them a distraction, often not a good one either

I don't think I indicated it will solve the problems, I just said things were changing. The service patterns are changing across the Pennines along with those of Northern (Who don't provide first class). I hope it will improve things but who knows. I just think that on the 185's the provision of first class wasn't well thought out. I can understand the difficulties involved in planning the services and providing the stock though, I think it should have first class, at the same time though the services from Liverpool (and other places) across the Pennines cover multiple commuter journies and stops close together. Makes it all very complicated doesn't it.

Northern do provide first class accommodation, on all 185s, which is enforced.
Apologies, my mistake. Which routes are Northern running 185's on at the mo? Are Northern Connect going to have first class in the future?

Me and 5 friends sat in First Class this evening from Staveley to Lancaster. None of us had First Class tickets, just Northern complementary vouchers. The conductor never said a word.
I have a Northern complementary voucher still to use. I tend to find no one asks any questions when you have one. Ha ha.

Blimey, I just assumed he was right and I had messed up but I have never seen anything longer than a single unit leaving Lime Street for Newcastle.
That's precisely what they have on commuter routes as Standard, if you hadn't noticed
Hi, I will be travelling from Hartlepool (HST) with grand central to London Kings Cross in first class I would just like to know is the food and drink they serve on board first class are free of charge or will I have to pay for them?

Coffee, tea, soft drinks and biscuits are complimentary.
If you want any more (eg sandwiches, hot food or booze) then they'll gladly bring it to your seat but you'll need to pay.

pre-Virgin, the deal on evening WCML trains was that any passenger who had a meal could sit in first class
In those days BR's choice of wine was excellent, and the menus on the Scottish-crewed services were pretty good: pan-fried venison with a couple of bottles of a decent red went down well and was cheaper than buying a first class ticket. You got to meet some interesting people as well

It could be argued that the only parts of the province that didn't have their railways ripped up by the UTA were mainly orange. Indeed I have heard that accusation as the reason the Derry route through Antrim was the one to survive in favour of the more green Fermanagh route.

Exactly what happened on my Southern train this morning. Short-formed, although not too crowded when I got on at Redhill to find a family of four sitting in first with their std. tickets proudly set out on the table! They had left their huge double buggy unfolded in the door vestibule, along with their suitcases (they presumably boarded at Gatwick, where it would have been even less busy) which caused major issues when the train did rapidly fill up en route. Southern's first class is rapidly becoming a free for all these days with conductors rarely leaving their chosen door or cab to check tickets and TTIs having mysteriously disappeared again after a few months of relatively intensive activity a few months back.

For me, First Class is for when the point of my journey is to enjoy a nice train trip. If I just need to get from A to B then I would probably not bother to pay the extra. Unless it's VTWC and a longer than half an hour trip, as their Standard Class seats are beyond uncomfortable.
I have to admit I didn't so we will have to have the damper from Alterego to explain it to thickos like me. Thanks in advance.
