Hi, I’m travelling between St Erth and St Ives. Trying to book a ticket online bring up the below ticket, but there is no explanation of what this is. All it says is route: surfboard.

What is this and what does it offer that an off-peak day return doesn’t?

That's just a supplement to bring a surfboard onboard as far as I know.

Charging nearly as much as 2 adults for a surfboard smaller than 1 adult.

Railway industry PR win

It's almost like they want the tracks to be paved over and used for motorways.

Surfboards are generally in excess of 6 feet long and at least 1 ft 6 in wide, so no smaller than the average adult in those dimensions and a damn sight less flexible.

The image in the BBC link looks average adult height and width, and I assume far less deep.

Yes but they can be stacked vertically several inches apart, unlike GWRs commuters pre-COVID from Reading

I dunno, I spent one rammed journey to Slough a while ago actually inside the old payphone "box" on a Class 166, in which I would only just fit, because that was the only way not to be pressed against someone else.

The £5.20 fee seems to be a flat rate though - BRFares shows the same fee applying to other journeys (for example: Plymouth - Penzance). But because St Erth - St Ives is a relatively cheap journey, the surfboard fee looks a lot in comparison.
