The attempt to build a Channel Tunnel in the 1880s was stopped after several miles of pilot tunnel had been built by military worries over vulnerability to an invasion. What if it had been completed? We would have had a double track connection from the South Eastern main line at Shakespeare Cliff to the French network at Sangatte, 100 years earlier than actually occurred. What difference would this have made to UK railway history?
