What happens if I catch a train now?

Theoretical (for now) question.
I may need to do a work related day trip to somewhere near the south coast in the next few weeks.
My preference, as usual, would be to take the train rather than drive. It's better for the environment, means I can use my time productively and is safer than driving.
My observation is that I'd come into contact with more people refuelling my car, and stopping for a cup of tea and a wee wee every two hours than I would on the train. If necessary I can walk between the London termini.
So I'm less likely to either catch or transmit Covid19 on the train.

What would happen if I was stopped and questioned? It's a work related journey. I *could* do it by car, but it wouldn't be sensible to pack that much driving into a single day. Who would I need to justify it to and what would happen if they didn't accept my justification?

Just tell them you can't use any other means of transport; they have to accept that.

There is no ban on using public transport. I'm sure you can explain you are on a business trip and driving isn't a sensible option.

You could always improvise a face-covering. Not sure how serious crowding on TfL is except first thing, but you could opt for the sub-surface lines. Or, as you suggest, walk (I assume you're not coming into Paddington?)
