What happens if barrier retains ticket later needed for delay repay?

My situation was that there was no indication at the time of exiting Man Vic that there might be subsequent delays, so I didn't even consider there might be a problem. However all points taken, and in future if I'm leaving a station between connections I will take a photo just in case. Thanks again everyone.

Yeah taking a photo is best, I think. I asked to retain a Halifax to Leeds ticket at Leeds and the chap wanted to know why. I said I might need it for delay repay. He said everything on that line has run on time all day. I said yes but I'm going to London now and it remains to be seen if I'll arrive on time. Cue a 5 minute lecture about how if I use split tickets then I can only claim for the delayed leg, not the whole journey, which got heated enough (entirely from his side I might add) that one of the security contractor goons came over and started half-ushering, half-shoving me. Second ticket was cross-London so all tickets on the booking issued on CCST.

Probably easier to take a photo.

How is this practical in the case of, for example, magstripe annual seasons (which, though getting rarer, are still issued)?

It is surely irrelevant - as the ticket is valid for as many journeys you care to (and are able ) to make within its validity and - in theory - you could claim DR on all of them (though would be limited to the pro rata fare paid in respect of that day).
