Dear all,

I know that 56040 entered preservation but was later scrapped. I don’t know much more than that.

Would anyone provide information of exactly what happened to this loco?

Many thanks

The Class 56 Group were looking at repairing 56040 but went instead for 56301, I believe 040 was cut up by Thompsons of Stockton

Believe it was scrapped due to internal body rot & corrosion.

Isn't this supposedly a common thing for 56s?

It was definitely that as well as the two traction motors and alternator problems mentioned in the link.
Basically the opportunity to purchase one in far better condition came up and they understandably grabbed it.

Could 040 not have been saved as a static exhibit?
The 56 group page says "We’d have liked to have kept 56040 but the funds were not available despite an appeal to raise funds to save her going for scrap. "

Ultimately there is only so much time, money and space available to any individual preservation group and to the preservation movement as a whole.

They copped a load of flack about it at the time, not least from the volunteers who had put a considerable amount of time and effort into getting 56040 running again. You can certainly see both sides of it.

Ultimately you've got 56301/56302 as well as 56006.

So canning oystermouth meant they could plough their cash & resources into those.

As a member at the time. Repairs were planned on 56040, but then they were offered 56301 at the price the repairs would have cost.
